If you’re absolutely set on buying a dog, do it right. Know the difference between a breeder who cares and one who only cares about getting paid.
What Ethical Breeding Looks Like:
Breeds rarely, with purpose and intention
Health tests both parents (hips, heart, eyes, genetic panels, etc.)
Raises puppies indoors, around humans and daily life
Keeps puppies a minimum of 8 weeks, ideally longer
Has a detailed contract, support, and return policy
Interviews you as much as you interview them
What Backyard Breeding Looks Like:
Breeds frequently or by "accident"
No proof of health testing or clearances
Puppies kept in garages, basements, or sheds
Sold online or through word of mouth, no contract
Pushes for quick pickup or payment
Doesn’t care where the puppy ends up
Questions to Ask Any Breeder:
Can I meet the mother (and ideally the father)?
What health testing has been done?
Can I see where the puppies are raised?
Do you offer support or take back the dog if needed?
How many litters do you have per year?
What socialization do the puppies get?
A responsible breeder wants to be questioned. If they dodge your questions, walk away.
Final Thought
Every dollar you spend supports a system. Choose the system that values life, not profit. Ethical breeders don’t sell to just anyone—and that’s exactly the point.
